THE RESCUE

Monday, April 15, 1912 : North Atlantic

2:30 a.m. : The Carpathia, travelling at over 17.5 knots on an oily sea, completes preparations for the survivors. Her hull is shaking and vibrating like never before, and despite the presence of ice, Commander Rostron does not reduce speed.

3:00 a.m. : Distress flares are fired every fifteen minutes, to signal its presence to shipwrecked crew.

3:30 a.m. : The survivors see the distress rockets fired by the Carpathia.

3:35 a.m. : The Carpathia enters the area where the Titanic sank, but only a desperately empty sea stretches as far as the eye can see.

4.00 a.m. : The engines are stopped to recover the first boat, N°2, spotted thanks to its green light.

4:10 a.m. : Boat N°2 is recovered.

4:45 a.m. : Boat N°13 is recovered.

5:10 a.m. : Boat N°7 is recovered.

6:00 a.m. : Boat N°3 is recovered.

6:15 a.m. : Boat C is recovered.

6:30 a.m. : The occupants of boat B are distributed between boats N°4 and N°12.

7:00 a.m. : Boat N°14 is recovered with D in tow. The occupants of boat A, which is abandoned half-submerged, are transferred to D.

8:15 a.m. : Boat N°12 is recovered.

8:50 a.m. : The Carpathia leaves for New York with 705 survivors on board.

Thursday, April 18, 1912 : New York - USA

9:35 p.m. : The Carpathia docks in the pouring rain at pier 54 in New York.

10:00 p.m. : The 703 survivors disembark.
